Where Producers Come to Learn, Dig, and Grow

Afliktor is an independent music-production publication built for the people who actually make the music — the bedroom producers, the touring artists, the sound designers, the crate-diggers, and everyone in between. We write about digital audio workstations, sound design, sampling and licensing, the evolution of bass music and the wider electronic scene, and the messy, practical business of getting your tracks heard. If you have ever stayed up until 3 a.m. chasing the perfect Reese bass, agonized over which sample pack to buy, or wondered whether a blog premiere is really worth the pitch, Afliktor was made for you.

We started Afliktor because the internet is full of music-production “content” that is either thin, out of date, or quietly trying to sell you something. Tutorials that skip the part that actually matters. Gear reviews written by people who never opened the box. Licensing advice that leaves you more confused — and more legally exposed — than before. We wanted to build the opposite: a resource that respects your time, tells you the truth, and treats you like the serious artist you are, whether you released your first loop yesterday or your fiftieth EP last year.

Our Mission

Our mission is simple to state and hard to do well: help producers make better music and better decisions.

That means demystifying the tools, from the newest Logic Pro and Ableton Live updates to the plugins and samplers you rely on every day. It means explaining the parts of the industry that nobody hands you a manual for — how sample licensing really works, what a royalty-free agreement does and does not allow, how blog and playlist coverage actually happens. And it means celebrating the culture itself: the artists, labels, and scenes pushing electronic and bass music forward, from the deep, rolling underground to the festival main stage.

We measure our success not in page views but in finished tracks, cleared samples, confident release decisions, and producers who feel a little less alone in a craft that is often practiced in isolation.

What We Cover

Afliktor’s editorial focus sits at the intersection of technology, craft, and culture. Our coverage spans a few core areas that build on one another.

Digital audio workstations and production tools. We follow the DAWs that shape how modern music is made — Logic Pro, Ableton Live, and the instruments, effects, and samplers inside them. When a major update lands, we go past the press-release bullet points to explain what actually changed, why it matters for your workflow, and whether it is worth your time to update. We compare platforms honestly, without tribal loyalty, so you can choose the tool that fits your way of working rather than someone else’s.

Sound design and technique. Great records are built from great sounds. We break down the techniques behind the genres we love — bass design, granular synthesis, rhythmic slicing, resampling, and the craft of turning a raw sample into something unmistakably yours. Our goal is always the practical takeaway you can open your DAW and use tonight.

Sampling, licensing, and the legal essentials. This is one of the most misunderstood corners of music-making, and one where a wrong assumption can cost you real money. We explain the difference between royalty-free libraries and rights-cleared record sampling, compare the platforms producers use to source loops and one-shots, and translate dense license language into plain English — so you can release your music with confidence instead of crossed fingers.

Bass music and electronic culture. We came up loving this music, and we still do. We chronicle the artists, labels, and releases moving the culture forward — the deep and underground as much as the mainstream — and we trace how sounds evolve, split, and cross-pollinate over time. Context makes you a better listener, and better listeners make better producers.

Promotion, career, and the business of being heard. Finishing the track is only half the job. We cover how to get your music in front of people who care: building a press kit, pitching blogs and curators, understanding submission platforms, coordinating a release, and setting expectations that keep you sane. No hype, no shortcuts that do not exist — just honest, workable strategy.

How We Work

Everything we publish is written to be useful, accurate, and independent.

Useful means we lead with what you can actually do. We would rather give you one technique you will use than ten facts you will forget.

Accurate means we do the work. We check current prices, features, and terms before we publish, because in this world details change fast — a plugin gets an update, a subscription tier shifts, a license clause is rewritten — and outdated advice is worse than no advice. When something is uncertain or evolving, we say so plainly rather than papering over it.

Independent means our recommendations are ours. We write about the tools and platforms we genuinely think are worth your attention, and we are always transparent about the difference between our editorial opinion and any commercial relationship. Our loyalty is to the reader at the other end of the article, not to any brand.

We also believe in humility. The people reading Afliktor include producers far more accomplished than we are at any given technique, and we learn from our community constantly. If we get something wrong, we want to hear about it and fix it.

Who We Are

Afliktor is run by a small, dedicated team of writers, producers, and lifelong music obsessives based in Birmingham, United Kingdom — a city with deep roots in bass-heavy, forward-thinking music. We are practitioners as much as journalists: people who have wrestled with the same DAWs, bought the same sample packs, sent the same nervous pitch emails, and celebrated the same small wins we write about. That perspective shapes everything on the site. We are not observing this world from the outside; we are in it with you.

Our Values

A few principles guide how we run Afliktor and what we choose to publish.

Respect the craft. Making music is hard, skilled, deeply personal work. We treat it that way, and we treat the people who do it that way.

Tell the truth. Honest reviews, realistic expectations, and clear explanations — even when the truth is less exciting than the hype. Trust is the only thing worth building.

Lower the barriers. Good information should not be locked behind jargon, gatekeeping, or paywalls that punish beginners. We work to make complex topics genuinely accessible without dumbing them down.

Champion the culture. We give attention to the underground and the independent, not just the biggest names, because that is where so much of the genre’s future is written.

Let’s Talk

We love hearing from the people who read Afliktor. Whether you have a question about something we published, a correction, a story tip, a partnership idea, or you just want to tell us what you are working on, our inbox is open. Feedback from producers is how we decide what to cover next, so if there is a topic you wish someone would finally explain clearly, tell us — there is a good chance we will write it.
